Aboyne Academy Orienteering Club Grant

published: 28 June, 2017

Thank you for awarding Aboyne Academy Orienteering Club a grant of £250 for attending the World Schools Orienteering Championships in Italy. The four 14 & 15 year old boys from Aboyne Academy made up the Scottish Boys Junior School team. Scotland were represented by 27 children from across Scotland, making up six teams in different categories. As well as getting to know their fellow Scottish orienteers, they also had the opportunity to join 146 teams from 27 countries. The Aboyne team excelled for Scotland, producing a gold medal in the Long Distance event (full results here under Schools M2 class) and a bronze medal in the Middle Distance event – the only medals for team Scotland over the week. As well as their success in the competitive events, the boys greatly benefited from meeting and sharing the experience with the rest of the Scottish team, making many new friendships. The event also included a cultural day where the different countries shared their culture with the others. The Scottish team took some typical Scottish food and drink to share, as well as performing Scottish dancing in their kilts. Meeting other teenagers from around the world and sharing a sporting event with them was one of the boys highlights. They all became equals and although they had cultural differences, they could all orienteer and enjoy each other’s company together.
£250 Travel Grant for Banchory Schools Orienteering Clubn

published: 08 June, 2017

Club Chairman Trevor Ricketts received the clubs £250 grant from curler Jackie Lockhart at the recent sports council AGM. The clubs grant report said; Banchory Schools Orienteering Team competed at the World Schools Orienteering Championships in Palermo, Italy a few weeks ago. In total, there were 27 athletes in the Scotland contingent in 2017 and 4 coaches, so the 9 athletes from Banchory Academy made up a third of the party, and Roger Coombs accompanied them as coach. There are 8 competition classes at WSOC: They are divided between boys and girls, older vs younger, and School teams vs ‘Select’ teams. The Select category allows for the best pupils from the selection races to join together from different schools to compete for a Scotland team as long as there is also a School team from that class. This year Banchory sent a W1 (senior) Girls team, a M1 (senior) boys team and Amber Graham was in the W2 (junior) Select Girls team.
Deeside Rugby Club £250 Club Development Grant

published: 08 June, 2017

Andy Ronald from the rugby club recieved a £250 grant from curler Jackie Lockhart and Alan Still sports council chairman. Dave commented; "Thanks again for the support for Deeside RFC's fledgling girls section. We have been running sessions for the girls since August 2016 but we felt we needed additional equipment to allow us to run our own training sessions and also to begin a weekly session at Aboyne Academy which we have been running since 17-Jan-17. The money that Aberdeenshire Sports Council kindly offered has been used to buy balls, bibs, tackling shields and cones to mark out pitches. From having no girls rugby at deeside last season we have ran a session nearly every weekend this season. We have hosted a girls Festival at deeside on 19th March where we had 28 girls (from Ellon, Huntly, Aberdeen, Banff, Inverurie) turn up to train and play a game and Deeside have been represented at u15 and u18 level in the girls club cup as part of the "Grampian Girls" teams. We also attended the schools 7s in Huntly and hope to attend the Stirling County 7s tournament on 28th May (again as part of Grampian Girls). And there was girls representation at the Tartan touch at Murrayfield. We ran a Tuesday after school session at aboyne academy in 2017 where we had around 12 girls attending regularly. Training numbers at woodend vary but there is a core of around 15 girls that train regularly with a total of 27
