Commonwealth Title for Abigael Mcbeath

published: 25 May, 2016

I was selected by Judo Scotland to represent Scotland in the Commonwealth Judo Championships in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. On Saturday 23rd April I travelled out on the long 26 hour journey to Port Elizabeth, South Africa alongside 7 other athletes and 2 coaches all representing Scotland. I was to fight on the Wednesday (in the juniors) and Thursday (in the seniors). On the Wednesday I was faced with 3 tough fights which included one against the African number 1. I fought the best I could and came out with the result of winning all three fights to become Junior Commonwealth Champion. On the Thursday I competed in the senior category which is slightly out of my comfort zone. I had 3 fights one of which lasted just over 7minutes (4 minutes is a regular contest). To my own surprise I won 2 out of my 3 fights this day, leaving me with the silver medal, only losing out to a women from India who is competing in the Rio Olympics this year. Overall I really enjoyed the trip and it was a great experience for my judo to be able to develop and the trip has given me plenty of things on which I can work on as well as two medals. Although this was a very memorable moment in my life I hope it to not be the last in my judo career, I wish to find myself travelling to an increased number of trips like these in the future and strive to better myself at every one.

I was delighted to be awarded a grant from the Aberdeenshire Sports Council to help with my table tennis. I train with the Scottish Table Tennis Youth Squad and have played for Scotland twice. Some of the grant will be used to pay for a weekend table tennis training camp in May run by Table Tennis Scotland in Drumchapel. I am going to use the rest of the money to help me replace the rubbers on my bat in time for the new table tennis season. I am currently ranked in the top ten in Scotland in the Cadet age group. Next season, I move up an age group and my goals are to be a top ten Junior player, to play in an English table tennis tournament and to continue to improve my backhand.
